Taking a bit of a nosedive

IIPM PUBLICATION

Air Deccan, Captain Gopinath’s baby that promises to make flying a reality for all Indians, has a spot of bad news, but one that it will recover from very soon, we hope! The Bangalore- based low-cost air carrier has posted a loss of Rs.2.13 billion for the third quarter (ended March 2007), although revenues for the quarter were up 66.34% (to Rs.457.45 crore) over the corresponding quarter, the year before. In the quarter before that, Air Deccan had made a profit of Rs.9.64 crore. Reasons for the loss? High operational costs and oversupply. Fuel prices were also high, and of course , there was also the fact that February and March are weak months in the travel sector. But there’s good news too. Vis-à-vis the corresponding period last year, the carrier improved its load factor to 83% from 71.75%, flew 1.7 million passengers against 1.07 million and operated 350 flights a day against 230 flights. Here’s wishing Air Deccan a quick recovery time!

Lanka seeks God

Professor Arindam Chaudhuri (Renowned Management Guru) Initiative

...but then, self-help is the way out
People turn to God as the last resort. And same holds true for the Sri Lankan President, Mahinda Rajapakse, who, having failed to overcome LTTE, has recently looked towards the Pope for help. Two weeks before the visit, the Pope, in his Easter message, had expressed concern over Sri Lanka affairs – an indication that the Pope was willing to intervene in the Lankan peace process. And post meeting, the Pope has appreciated Rajapakse for improving Lanka's Human Rights record.

Both the Sinhalese and Tamil communities have almost an equal share in Sri Lanka's Church (Christians constitute about 8% of the Sri Lankan population). But the point is – does the Church enjoy any leverage in the region to bring about peace? “The Church has a strong presence in Jaffna peninsula. It can definitely play a very powerful role as it has a large number of followers on both sides,” the Sri Lankan Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hussain Bhaila, told B&E from Colombo. However, Dr. N. Manoharan, a Sri Lankan Affairs expert with IPCS, New Delhi has a different take, "The church cannot really influence the situation on ground." Citing the example of Madhu Church in Mannar district, he further added, "This particular church was known for its neutrality & was used as a pilgrimage site by all communities. But a couple of years back, this church was attacked and its influence as a neutral actor too waned."

Despite claims by both the warring parties to work towards settlement, the peace prospects indeed look dim under the present circumstances. The five-year old Oslo peace process lies in shambles. The cease-fire agreement exists only on paper. Interventions by India, Japan, Norway and many others have failed to bring about desired change. Now, to expect the Pope for a miracle, is like asking for a bit too much. The two-decade-old dispute between the government and Tamil-tigers can only be resolved through well-meaning negotiations and winning the support of the people on both sides. The Pope can't do much here...

The giants have finally woken up! Er... At least they have!

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

Here’s a no-brainer – guess what was the most important criterion for making it to the list of America’s ‘Hundred Best Corporate Citizens’? Environment protection, of course! Corporate bigwigs are waking up to the significance of measures to ensure that their CSR actually has environmental relevance. PepsiCo recently announced that it will purchase enough ‘Green-e certified’ renewable energy certificates (RECs). IBM received an award from the WWF and the Center for Energy & Climate Solutions in 2005 for being the first company to meet its program commitment (it actually exceeded the goal of achieving an average annual CO2 by 1.7% since 1998). AMD, Intel & Xerox (amongst many others) are also working together to develop guidelines and monitoring procedures to address various global socio-environmental issues.

The company would test thewaters by opening lodges attached to its e-choupals and Choupal Saagars. IIPM Publications :- Tobacco and alcohol advertising is banned in India

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

Tobacco and alcohol advertising is banned in India. Then how do you justify the ‘Red and White Bravery Awards’ or the ‘Manikchand Filmfare Awards’? Teacher’s Whisky advertises for ‘Teacher’s Achievement Awards’, and Bacardi Advertises its ‘Bacardi Blast Album’. Is such surrogate advertising right when the fact is that tobacco is the second major common cause of death and children start alcohol consumption at an age as early as 14 years?

‘Choice’ was advertised as a birth control pill with iron; however, it contained ingredients, which categorized it as a Scheduled H drug to be given only on prescription. Recently, Wings Pharmaceuticals flooded news channels with advertisements of a drug called ‘Diclowin Plus’, promoting it as an effective medicine for pain relief. However, what it hid from consumers was the fact that if the medicine was taken without a doctor’s prescription (and guidance), it could trigger off peptic ulcers, blood disorders, and ironically, even headaches.

Ujjal Sinha: CEO of Kolkata-based Genesis Advertising

IIPM PUBLICATION

The fact that the country is making great progress and Indians are making a mark in every sphere globally, he believes, is something that no one can deny and is hugely praiseworthy. “However, to ride on that and conclude (insist?) that we have made big waves and become a force to reckon with, is utter rubbish! We have not. We are (at best) just about beginning to draw attention. The one making waves is Brazil, who ironically is not even an English-speaking country! They have a very special Brazilian way of creating ads that are wacky, sexy and extremely endearing, which seems to be a huge hit in the West, totally disproportionate to the tiny size of their country. More power to the elbow!” Khan believes that if people are waking and looking at us, it’s largely due to the fact that Indians are making solid waves across so many diverse disciplines, spheres and fields. Advertising is only one tiny speck... Agree?

Anil Ambani, Ratan Tata, Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal and Lakshmi Mittal are some formidable rivals that the Ruias have to contend with

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

Tony Jesudasan is not someone who is very well known beyond the realm of media and the world of hacks. With an ever ready grin, a smile and a guffaw when required, he has been master minding and handling corporate communications (call it media relations if you want) for the Reliance Group from Delhi for close to two decades. After the famed split of 2005, Jesudasan opted for the younger sibling Anil Ambani. In the course of his tenure as a loyal Ambani lieutenant, Jesudasan has inevitably ruffled a few feathers. But few snort and raise their eyebrows in flashing anger at the mere mention of his name, the way communications managers working for Essar do.

Let’s Feast In India

IIPM PUBLICATION

Uncle Sam has always eyed India as a greener pasture and with the sheen of Wal-Mart’s entry in India, the QSR players’ plans here have been totally overshadowed. With McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Domino’s and several others being lambasted in their own homes on grounds of obesity and several other issues, India proves to be the ideal hunting ground. QSR players are having a merry time here with certain segments in India now recording higher growth rates than the growth rate in USA. According to industry estimates, growth rate of the pizza market in US is merely 5%, while the Indian market is showing 20% growth. Further on, behemoths like Burger King, Starbucks et al scouting for a franchisee Indian partner to roll out their outlets here. Interestingly though, Starbucks’ Indian safari has been put in stymie on IPR related issues, as Indian entrepreneur Shahnaz Husain is also coming out with a coffee chain, christened as Starstrucks.

Pantad med?

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

The Indian retail business space is being considered the sunrise sector for India Inc; proof being the long queue of corporate biggies waiting to become a part of this growing inferno. Surely, with just 3% of the total retail space being occupied by organised retail players (estimated by Ernst & Young), a lot of promise lies for all on this ammo-splattered stage. While there is no doubt about the bright prospects in the sector, one thing stands out for sure – in the face of so many amateurs who are betting huge on the sector, the older players should not forget their strengths and core focus areas. So there’s Biyani who has perhaps made that horrendous mistake which might just cost him his present remarkable stance in the Indian retail sector. Yes, while scampering in the rat race, Biyani has perhaps forgotten the need to strengthen his flagship ventures.

Radio to the rescue

IIPM PUBLICATION

A country without a name, its borders, unknown, and its citizens ‘lost’, Lost City Radio has Norma, the chief character, playing host to a late night radio show – ‘Lost City Radio’ – a program striving to unite people missing in war with their kin. The insurgency of over a decade, between the government and IL (Illegitimate Legion), an imagined separatist faction (read leftist), has subsided but the clouds remain dark and cast evil tones. It’s amidst these black overtones that in Norma’s radio gig emerges a silver streak. Through her program on the only radio station in existence, she reads out names every Sunday night of people lost or displaced, tortured or dead. Hers is the most familiar diction in this hapless nation, where ten long years have failed to diminish shivers of trauma from post-war syndrome. Nonetheless, a glimmer of hope endures, rendering the radio a messiah of deliverance. Beneath this noble quest however, lies another, rather personal mission. Because for Norma, now in her early forties, hosting ‘Lost City Radio’ means an extended expedition to look for Rey, her lost botanist husband with a penchant for intimacy with the banned IL rebels, whose disappearance about a decade ago serves as a compelling reason for her transmissions on the show.

Is there a ripple effect?

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

While the real estate boom in India is just beginning to lose some semblance of sanity, the market in the US is in the middle of a decline, after having spiraled ridiculously out of control in the recent past. Mittal of Triveni comments on the situation in the US, “Nationally, the overall outlook seems reasonable: 7% appreciation for 2006 and fl at for 2007. According to the forecast, a third of the nation’s 100 largest metro areas (accounting for 60% of US population) are expected to see modestly falling house prices.”

Around the year 2000, the US Fed had softened its monetary policy considerably in order to boost the economy. This resulted in a massive diversion of funds to the real estate sector, with heavy borrowing from banks. Later on, in the light of the bubble that developed, the Fed went on rate hike spree, increasing interest rates for 16 times in a row. The drop has hit hard. US home building stocks have fallen by over 50% from their peaks in the last two years.

If history is to be believed, PS3 has great chances against all odds...

MANAGEMENT GURU

How about a free high-definition television and a Hummer ride back home as freebies on a PlayStation3 (PS3) purchase? Awesome it is, but that’s what customers of PS3 got in the UK! But was it an obligation for lack of substantial upgradation on the part of PS3?

Looking at price, PS3 is tagged between $500-$600. Expensive? Yes, when compared to Microsoft ’s Xbox 360 (priced between $300-$400) & Nintendo Wii ($250). But if you weren’t someone who’d ignore quality for price, then here’s more. On the technological front, PS3, with Blu-Ray, Wi-Fi & 60GB HDD, is far ahead of its competitors Xbox 360 (with just 20 GB capacity) and Wii (a mere 512 MB). And now you’d ask – why Blu-Ray? Surely, where we have a gadget that can download videos, we’d desire greater storage – precisely why Blu-Ray is desired, which uses a shorter wavelength laser beam; therefore enabling storage of more data within a given space as compared to the normal ‘red’ laser with longer wavelength used by Xbox 360.

Who wants tobe a trillionaire?

MANAGEMENT GURU

The annual FICCI-PwC report on the Indian Entertainment and Media sector is out and predicts a staggering CAGR of 18% for this sector by 2011. The report pegs the sector's turnover to touch a whopping Rs.1 trillion at the end of 2011 from the current Rs.437 billion. While the TV industry is projected to grow by 22%, the print media sector will grow at 13%. With over 100 million pay TV homes in the next four years, subscription revenues are supposed to be the biggest boost provider for the idiot box. The Radio is expected to witness a growth of 28% and a cool Rs.17 billion as ad revenues by 2011. Also, 2006 saw 13 FDI proposals getting the green signal by the centre and 22 more are under the government's scrutiny.

Casting a brutal yet beautiful spell

MANAGEMENT GURU

Flooded by awards from all over, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón sure wouldn’t mind claiming the Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film and maybe a few more, for after all it is up for 6 Oscars in all! Pan’s Labyrinth teeters between the horrors of reality and the even more horrifying fantasies. The Spanish film is about a girl Ofelia, played by Ivana Baquero, who digs deep into her fairy tales as her mother falls ill and eventually dies in labour, leaving her to the care of the very incarnation of evil– her stepfather. And while grappling with life’s travesties, she discovers an ancient labyrinth where she meets Pan, a faun played by Doug Jones, who helps her return to netherworld where she was once a princess! A story captivating and chilling in equal measures, it deserves the award as it shows Hollywood the way to new heights of creative brilliance.

There is something strange about Apple.

MANAGEMENT GURU

This is the perfect definition of a niche product that will last as long as the next 'hit' gadget hits the market. We can expect that, as carriers and telephone producers try to differentiate their offer and grab pieces of the market that they will feverishly work on what the next gadget needs to be.

A recent Forrester Research survey on these features show that only 1% of the US cell phone users would want a telephone that has e-mail, internet browsing, music and video playing capability. That’s a market number in Mac territory.

What is remarkable about Apple is the glitz: The well rounded product, the perfect design, the great announcement show. We also have to salute this ability to aggregate... In all – a doubtful future!

Empty gestures...

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

For the Congress & by it as well

The politicisation of the sacrosanct traditions of the Indian freedom struggle has again highlighted a dangerous trend. With the Sonia-led Congress Party stealing the limelight in the recent Satyagraha extravaganza, the focus has shift ed from Mahatma Gandhi’s all inclusive non-violent struggle to official attempts to add halo to Sonia Gandhi’s leadership.

In what was stated to be a party event, Indian official machinery went overdrive in ensuring maximum possible exposure to the event. The significance then rests on the fact that while the official machinery invited leaders of 85 countries, including several noble laureates to participate, almost all the leadership of India’s opposition party was left out. While Congress leaders were present as ‘special delegates’, India’s leading opposition party, the BJP, was conspicuous by its absence.

As the Indian diplomatic machinery was in the fifth gear to ensure maximum global presence in the two-days meet, the move has been summarised by critics as an attempt to give international exposure and coverage to a preferred set of Indian politicians.

Ironically, while Mahatma’s Satyagraha sought to overthrow the British, the legacy has been used to gain political mileage in its worst form.

Performance linked pay

IIPM PUBLICATION

If you thought that was all, hang on... When it comes to the development of employees and their salary revisions, here’s what the functional leaders say — “Connection between employee cost and return on investment is important,” says Aquil Busrai. Furthering the discussion, G. K. Agarwal, Director (HR), NTPC adds, “Companies need to develop explicit linkages of payouts by matching the rewards with levels of performance.” What these leaders are specifically pointing towards is that when it comes to rewarding employees for their performances, there is a sharp differential within the same skill set. Therefore, as return on investment on each employee drives their salary revision and rewards process, and even as companies focus on optimal costs, the HR function needs to develop complex systems to measure the performance of each employee accurately, which is also possible by implementing an HRIS.

IIPM BEST MBA INSTITUTE

But there surely have been tradeoffs in this ‘delivery’ oriented model, as Domino’s seems to have missed out big time in the sit-and-dine segment; an area where arch rival Pizza Hut from the stable of ‘Yum! Brands’ is stealing the main show. But Ajay, after two years of tasting and testing, is showing signs of paying heed to this trade-off, as Domino’s has now planned to open as many as 45 such sit-anddine outlets across India by the end of 2007. When we posture to him that this is tantamount to breaking the brand image of Domino’s, snap comes the reply, “A unique image of the brand, does not necessarily mean the best business proposition. Domino’s globally has been the best delivery brand for years; and we are not making a departure from this delivery centricity. Our communication and marketing strategy is still sticking to that and we are not confused with our USP.”
