Tsotsi!!

... And not just in Tsotsitaal!
Underneath the golden sun, the balmy breeze blissfully blows, the warm rush of water engulfs your feet, and as it ebbs sifting the soft sand beneath your heels, all else seems inconsequential as you inhale all in this Durban dream. This South African city is to be the venue of a film festival whose reputation is fast ascending the ranks of the global movie industry. With this year’s triumph of the psychological thriller Tsotsi (meaning ‘thug’ in Tsotsitaal) at the Oscars in the Foreign Language Film category, and also the recent qualification of the movie Elalini for the final stage of the Student Academy Awards, the 27th Durban International Film Festival, to be held from the 14th to 25th June, is certainly on the radar of the entertainment world.

Davis Guggenheim’s much hyped movie An Inconvenient Truth will be the curtain raiser for the festival, followed by a cornucopia of national and international movies. Predictably, much of the limelight will be hogged by African films, including a special Youth Day screening of Tsotsi and Elalini and also last year’s leading productions Early In The Morning by Gahité Fofana and Wrestling Grounds by Cheikh Ndiaye. In the cynosure of all eyes will be the Asian cinema, too, with movies from Korea, Japan and India. Representing India will be Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Memories Of Mist and a special screening of the nonesuch Satyajit Ray’s The Music Room, which will be complemented by a performance by the inimitable sarod player Wajahat Khan. Six Iranian films will offer a rare glimpse into the aesthetic and creative consciousness of their culture. Riding Durban’s wave of fame as Surf City will be a six-day extravaganza, with movies on surfing shown on a giant in- flatable screen by the beach. To all of the above, add script writing competitions, an animation films festival, workshops and all this shall come together to form the delightful Durban durbar.
