Uncle Sam has always eyed India as a greener pasture and with the sheen of Wal-Mart’s entry in India, the QSR players’ plans here have been totally overshadowed. With McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Domino’s and several others being lambasted in their own homes on grounds of obesity and several other issues, India proves to be the ideal hunting ground. QSR players are having a merry time here with certain segments in India now recording higher growth rates than the growth rate in USA. According to industry estimates, growth rate of the pizza market in US is merely 5%, while the Indian market is showing 20% growth. Further on, behemoths like Burger King, Starbucks et al scouting for a franchisee Indian partner to roll out their outlets here. Interestingly though, Starbucks’ Indian safari has been put in stymie on IPR related issues, as Indian entrepreneur Shahnaz Husain is also coming out with a coffee chain, christened as Starstrucks.

Radio to the rescue

A country without a name, its borders, unknown, and its citizens ‘lost’, Lost City Radio has Norma, the chief character, playing host to a late night radio show – ‘Lost City Radio’ – a program striving to unite people missing in war with their kin. The insurgency of over a decade, between the government and IL (Illegitimate Legion), an imagined separatist faction (read leftist), has subsided but the clouds remain dark and cast evil tones. It’s amidst these black overtones that in Norma’s radio gig emerges a silver streak. Through her program on the only radio station in existence, she reads out names every Sunday night of people lost or displaced, tortured or dead. Hers is the most familiar diction in this hapless nation, where ten long years have failed to diminish shivers of trauma from post-war syndrome. Nonetheless, a glimmer of hope endures, rendering the radio a messiah of deliverance. Beneath this noble quest however, lies another, rather personal mission. Because for Norma, now in her early forties, hosting ‘Lost City Radio’ means an extended expedition to look for Rey, her lost botanist husband with a penchant for intimacy with the banned IL rebels, whose disappearance about a decade ago serves as a compelling reason for her transmissions on the show.

While the real estate boom in India is just beginning to lose some semblance of sanity, the market in the US is in the middle of a decline, after having spiraled ridiculously out of control in the recent past. Mittal of Triveni comments on the situation in the US, “Nationally, the overall outlook seems reasonable: 7% appreciation for 2006 and fl at for 2007. According to the forecast, a third of the nation’s 100 largest metro areas (accounting for 60% of US population) are expected to see modestly falling house prices.”

Around the year 2000, the US Fed had softened its monetary policy considerably in order to boost the economy. This resulted in a massive diversion of funds to the real estate sector, with heavy borrowing from banks. Later on, in the light of the bubble that developed, the Fed went on rate hike spree, increasing interest rates for 16 times in a row. The drop has hit hard. US home building stocks have fallen by over 50% from their peaks in the last two years.

If history is to be believed, PS3 has great chances against all odds...

How about a free high-definition television and a Hummer ride back home as freebies on a PlayStation3 (PS3) purchase? Awesome it is, but that’s what customers of PS3 got in the UK! But was it an obligation for lack of substantial upgradation on the part of PS3?

Looking at price, PS3 is tagged between $500-$600. Expensive? Yes, when compared to Microsoft ’s Xbox 360 (priced between $300-$400) & Nintendo Wii ($250). But if you weren’t someone who’d ignore quality for price, then here’s more. On the technological front, PS3, with Blu-Ray, Wi-Fi & 60GB HDD, is far ahead of its competitors Xbox 360 (with just 20 GB capacity) and Wii (a mere 512 MB). And now you’d ask – why Blu-Ray? Surely, where we have a gadget that can download videos, we’d desire greater storage – precisely why Blu-Ray is desired, which uses a shorter wavelength laser beam; therefore enabling storage of more data within a given space as compared to the normal ‘red’ laser with longer wavelength used by Xbox 360.

Who wants tobe a trillionaire?

The annual FICCI-PwC report on the Indian Entertainment and Media sector is out and predicts a staggering CAGR of 18% for this sector by 2011. The report pegs the sector's turnover to touch a whopping Rs.1 trillion at the end of 2011 from the current Rs.437 billion. While the TV industry is projected to grow by 22%, the print media sector will grow at 13%. With over 100 million pay TV homes in the next four years, subscription revenues are supposed to be the biggest boost provider for the idiot box. The Radio is expected to witness a growth of 28% and a cool Rs.17 billion as ad revenues by 2011. Also, 2006 saw 13 FDI proposals getting the green signal by the centre and 22 more are under the government's scrutiny.

Casting a brutal yet beautiful spell

Flooded by awards from all over, Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuarón sure wouldn’t mind claiming the Oscar for the Best Foreign Language Film and maybe a few more, for after all it is up for 6 Oscars in all! Pan’s Labyrinth teeters between the horrors of reality and the even more horrifying fantasies. The Spanish film is about a girl Ofelia, played by Ivana Baquero, who digs deep into her fairy tales as her mother falls ill and eventually dies in labour, leaving her to the care of the very incarnation of evil– her stepfather. And while grappling with life’s travesties, she discovers an ancient labyrinth where she meets Pan, a faun played by Doug Jones, who helps her return to netherworld where she was once a princess! A story captivating and chilling in equal measures, it deserves the award as it shows Hollywood the way to new heights of creative brilliance.

This is the perfect definition of a niche product that will last as long as the next 'hit' gadget hits the market. We can expect that, as carriers and telephone producers try to differentiate their offer and grab pieces of the market that they will feverishly work on what the next gadget needs to be.

A recent Forrester Research survey on these features show that only 1% of the US cell phone users would want a telephone that has e-mail, internet browsing, music and video playing capability. That’s a market number in Mac territory.

What is remarkable about Apple is the glitz: The well rounded product, the perfect design, the great announcement show. We also have to salute this ability to aggregate... In all – a doubtful future!

The politicisation of the sacrosanct traditions of the Indian freedom struggle has again highlighted a dangerous trend. With the Sonia-led Congress Party stealing the limelight in the recent Satyagraha extravaganza, the focus has shift ed from Mahatma Gandhi’s all inclusive non-violent struggle to official attempts to add halo to Sonia Gandhi’s leadership.

In what was stated to be a party event, Indian official machinery went overdrive in ensuring maximum possible exposure to the event. The significance then rests on the fact that while the official machinery invited leaders of 85 countries, including several noble laureates to participate, almost all the leadership of India’s opposition party was left out. While Congress leaders were present as ‘special delegates’, India’s leading opposition party, the BJP, was conspicuous by its absence.

As the Indian diplomatic machinery was in the fifth gear to ensure maximum global presence in the two-days meet, the move has been summarised by critics as an attempt to give international exposure and coverage to a preferred set of Indian politicians.

Ironically, while Mahatma’s Satyagraha sought to overthrow the British, the legacy has been used to gain political mileage in its worst form.
