Pan’s Labyrinth teeters between the horrors of reality and the even more horrifying fantasies. The Spanish film is about a girl Ofelia, played by Ivana Baquero, who digs deep into her fairy tales as her mother falls ill and eventually dies in labour, leaving her to the care of the very incarnation of evil– her stepfather. And while grappling with life’s travesties, she discovers an ancient labyrinth where she meets Pan, a faun played by Doug Jones, who helps her return to netherworld where she was once a princess! A story captivating and chilling in equal measures, it deserves the award as it shows Hollywood the way to new heights of creative brilliance.
