Well, Tatas may not pay so much heed to plantation in their tea venture, but when it comes to coffee, Tata Coffee (a subsidiary of Tata Tea) not only has 23 estates, but the company also is the largest coffee-plantation company in Asia. Not only that, Tata Coffee, most surprisingly, is also the largest producer of pepper in India. Though Tata Tea’s focus is not high in the premium tea segment, in coffee, the Tatas are present in the entire segment, including instant coffee. Bucked up with a production of as much as 10 million kgs per year, Tata Coffee exported about 4 million kgs of instant coffee for the year 2005. The company’s global ambitions are diverse. Though Tata Coffee’s acquisition of Eight O’Clock Coffee (with its 50% market share in the US whole bean coffee sector) has given it a thundering presence in the US, it was actually Russia where Tata Coffee is one of the most favoured coffee brands.
