In Labour, avoid ‘Blair’ing sounds

IIPM Publication
What should revive hope among the Tories is the clear anti-Labour anti-Blair direction that Clarke promises to take. In fact, being the most well known of Tory leaders, despite being 65 years old, this former Chancellor is the best bet to lead the party back to power. Clarke has not disappointed them and has launched his bid for the party leadership with a strident attack on the Blair regime’s Iraq policy, something that the Conservative leadership under Michael Howard had been unable to do till now. Clarke has also attacked Blair’s ‘Bush poodle’ image by pushing for a more independent line that would safeguard British interests above all others. But unlike some party leaders, perhaps rightly so, Clarke does not support the idea of an immediate pullout of British troops from Iraq saying that though the reason for sending them there may have been bogus, they could not leave Iraq to chaos and disorder.
