Blah-Blah!

Time for Awards at IIPM

A bare necessity to bare-all!
Catherine Zeta JonesCatherine Zeta Jones is more than willing to shed it, all for the big screen, but on one basic condition – a justifiable role! If you thought that’s a simple demand, think again! The 37-year-old Welsh beauty who starred in The Mask of Zorro doesn’t find nudity a big issue but she isn’t about to drop her clothes for any run-of-the-mill role! At the same time, she likes her roles to be the ‘normal characters’ rather than the glam-queen types. So, while the directors scratch their heads inventing ‘the’ role, you Jones’ fans will just have to sit tight!

“One cup of tea, Kylie!”
A person Kylie Minogueattired in the customary uniform of a waitress in a five star hotel should obviously be a waitress and not the hot pop star Kylie Minogue, right? Donning a waitress uniform for a short span of time might seem like a sexy idea, but it can also put you in tight spots as Kylie Minogue recently learnt when working for a BBC1 show. An unsuspecting aged lady mistook the singer who was posing as an attendant in a restaurant on Titanic for an actual one, and placed an order for a cup of tea! Talk about an identity crisis!

False assumptions!
No one Scarlett Johanssoncan ever question Scarlett Johansson’s sensuality that has enthralled millions of fans world-wide. So when news of the ravishing Hollywood beauty’s possible role as popular porn star, Jenna Jameson, in her adapted biography reached people’s ears, everyone was absolutely ecstatic! As the media went on a rather predictable over-drive, Jameson herself, also confirmed the news. Scarlett on the other hand was not too pleased by the rumours and flatly denied her involvement in any such project. Wonder if she heard the sound of millions of hearts shattering at that piece of news?

Usher’s hush-hush affair
Celebrity Usherweddings always become the talk of the town and are known to be glamorous and even dramatic at times. So when Usher’s wedding with Tameka Foster was mysteriously called off just two hours before the event without any plausible excuse stated, it didn’t stop the tongues from wagging. While the pointing- fingers-at-each-other session moved back and forth between Usher’s mom, Tameka and Usher, Tameka finally broke the silence and dismissed all the assumptions as being untrue, but still left us without stating the actual cause! It’s back to the drawing board folks!

India’s Wonder Woman!
Ever since Priyanka ChopraKrrish, it seems that Priyanka Chopra has taken a liking to action roles. For instance, her next film Drona sees her showing off some classic action moves for her role of a bodyguard to Big B junior – Abhishek Bachchan. One would think that it were the WesternLara Croft flicks that triggered the idea for the role but on the contrary, Priyanka claims her character originates from Indian mythology. She’s even picked up a couple of moves for her role from Gatka – a Sikh form of martial art. So get ready guys, for it’salmost show time!

The sexiest of them all!
When itCelina Jaitly comes to sex appeal, the Bollywood industry doesn’t seem to fall short of names. And to spare a lot of chaos and bloodshed in efforts to decide who’s the best, a poll was conducted that proclaimed Celina Jaitly at the top of Bollywood’s ‘sexiest’ pole. So what is Celina’s secret that puts her ahead of other sex symbols like Mallika Sherawat and Koena Mitra? Here’s the equation – a whole lot of attitude to go with her good looks and amazing figure = The X Factor!

Drooling over being dad
There’s Vivek Oberoia kid in every one of us and an even bigger one in Vivek Oberoi. At least, that’s Vivek’s explanation as to why he’s not taking any steps to have some kids of his own! But that doesn’t stop Vivek from yapping about the dream family that he’ll some day have, replete with absolutely “badmaash” kids. To make his fatherly ambitions come true, Vivek’s first looking out for the ‘right’ woman to come his way. One step at a time does it boy!

It is time to smash some myths about the Indo-US nuclear deal & the media attention

The Sunday Indian - India's Greatest News weekly

TheIt is time to smash some myths about the Indo-US nuclear deal & the media attention same holds true for hydro power. India has enormous potential to harness its rivers to generate electricity. Once again, thanks to state apathy towards poor people displaced by dams and the noisy and media friendly ‘green’ brigade, the very mention of dams has become politically incorrect in the country. The funny thing is, all the major nations of the world, including China, the US, France, Germany and Russia have already built the dams and are now preaching environmentalism! Then again, there are non-conventional sources of energy that hold promise. If half the cars in Brazil can run on ethanol, surely India with its huge potential for sugarcane and molasses and corn can do something similar? And don’t forget the fact that nuclear plants can be terribly destructive of the environment!

The second big myth is about Uncle Sam and how it is a great friend and ally of India. If you read newspapers now, you might be fooled into thinking that India can have no greater friend and ally than the United States of America. That’s where commentators seem to be exercising the option of ‘eyes closed’ instead of ‘eyes open’. For most part of India’s journey as an independent nation state since 1947, the United States has not been a friend. At the best of times, it has been an estranged democracy. At the worst of times, it has been downright hostile to India.

A few historical facts need to be enumerated here to set the record straight. Since 1948, when Pakistan invaded Kashmir, the United States has consistently supported Pakistan in the dispute. Since 1947, it is the United States that has supplied Pakistan with the tanks, aircraft and guns that military dictators of Pakistan ave used to wage war against India. In 1971, when millions of East Pakistanis were being butchered by its own army, the United States not only openly supported Pakistan, but also militarily threatened India! Since 1974, when India conducted its first nuclear test, the United States has practiced a technology ‘apartheid’ regime against India. India has been battered, bloodied and bruised by terrorism since the 1980s-first for the cause of Khalistan and then in the garb of Islamic jehad in Kashmir. The whole world knows that the terrorists who strike India with impunity are financed, armed, aided, abetted and encouraged by Pakistan. Yet, till 19 hijackers changed the course of history and crashed two planes into the twin towers during what is now known as 9/11, American officials used to contemptuously ignore repeated complaints by India that Pakistan is behind cross border terrorism. During the 1990s, when the Soviet Union (A traditional ally of India) disintegrated, the United States forced Russia to cancel a cryogenic deal with India that would helped the country’s missile and space programs immensely. After 1998, when India went in for the second round of nuclear tests, the United States virtually blacklisted India. The funny thing is, recent disclosures of official documents in the United States reveal that Uncle Sam was well aware of the clandestine nuclear bonhomie between China and India and chose to close its eyes to such a flagrant case of nuclear proliferation. Even funnier, Uncle Sam was ready and willing to strike a deal with the Taliban regime of Afghanistan! Till 9/11 happened, that is! Though there is much more that can be told about America’s so called love for India since 1947, the few facts mentioned above should be enough to dispel the myth that America has always had the best interests of India.
